Palmetto Shared Services Alliance (PSSA), in partnership with SC DSS, has launched the Palmetto Childcare Connect (PCC) pilot, an innovative substitute workforce program designed to support licensed childcare centers in Anderson and Marlboro Counties, South Carolina. PCC is now expanding into Greenville County.
As a Childcare Substitute Professional, you'll serve as a trusted “Palmetto Pop-In,” stepping into classrooms to support programs when they need it most. Whether covering a planned absence or responding to a last-minute staffing gap, your presence ensures classrooms remain safe, supported, and fully operational for children and families.
Substitutes are hired and paid directly by the childcare programs where they work. PSSA coordinates the program, handles screening and training, and connects you with centers, but your paycheck comes from each program you serve. This flexibility lets you choose when and where you work while gaining valuable experience across age groups and classroom environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide short-term classroom coverage in licensed childcare centers
- Support daily routines and actively supervise children
- Follow direction from center staff and leadership
- Maintain a safe, clean, and professional environment
Ongoing Support & Training
PSSA ensures you're prepared before entering a classroom:
- Fingerprinting and required background checks
- 20 hours of training aligned with SC DSS requirements
- Program orientation and classroom support guidance
- Ongoing support as you begin working
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Comfortable working with young children
- Willing to follow direction and support existing staff
- Reliable, punctual, and professional
- Able to adapt to different environments
A 30-day supervised period is required for individuals without prior classroom experience.

Pay & Benefits
Competitive pay based on the SC Endeavors Career Ladder. Pay increases based on your education and experience level. There are no benefits offered, but access to competitive supplemental benefits is available, including dental, vision, Docs on Call, and more.
This pilot program is currently serving Anderson and Marlboro Counties and is now expanding to Greenville County, with plans for future statewide expansion. Must be based near/in, or willing to travel to Anderson County.
